When I was a first-year medical student, my classmates and I used to go down to the hospital cafeteria between lectures to buy snacks. The women from whom we bought them at the check-out counters were all young and sullen, rarely even glancing up at their customers as they rang up purchases. Their customers, in turn, seemed equally uninterested in them. So I decided one day I was going to get them to smile each time they rang up my purchases. To do this, I decided I'd simply start smiling at them myself. "Hello!" I started saying each time I'd approach. At first, they actually shrank from me physically. But within a few days, they started to smile back at me. And as time passed and I continued to smile and say a bright hello each time I came before them, I noticed something interesting: most of the time they were still wearing the same lifeless expressions. I'd become their "on" switch. Their focus was so concrete that to the person in line right before me they remained their same apparently disinterested, unhappy selves. But as soon as I entered the narrow band of space immediately before them, their eyes would suddenly light up and their mouths would curve into a smile. And I could tell, though we never exchanged any words other than "hello" and they knew absolutely nothing about me, that they were genuinely glad to see me.

Mother Teresa (1910-1997) Albanian-born missionary. A smile is a light in the window of the soul indicating that the heart is at home. Unknown Source There are hundreds of languages in the world but a smile speaks them all. Smile; it the second best thing one can do with one's lips. Attitude Adjuster: When you smile at someone, nine times out of 10 the other person will smile back and you've made two people's days brighter and better. Children smile on the average 400 times/day; Adults: 15 times/day. Ever wonder why? If I thought that a smile of mine, might linger the whole day through and lighten some heart with a heavier part, I'd not withhold it - Would you?

Create a Smile Create-A-Smile History Firefighters see the worst society has to offer, sadly, sometimes on a daily basis. They respond to calls with many tasks to accomplish in a critically short amount of time. Developing a strategy and executing it, whether it is for fighting a fire or a technical rescue, can take as short as 20 minutes from getting the call to the end of the call. However, the call doesn’t end after the fire is put out or someone has been rescued from a totaled car. Often times, fire fighters leave a scene knowing that the victims they are leaving will have a lot of heart ache, recovery and work ahead of them. It was a gruesome call that inspired the Redwood City Firefighter's Association to launch their efforts to develop the foundation they call, “Create-A-Smile.” Engine 9, Shift B, responded to a medical aid call back in 1993. The details of this call are horrific and the brutality of it is hard to describe. A four-year-old girl had been kidnapped, raped, beaten, and thrown from a car in the parking lot of a storage facility on Hansen Street in Redwood City. She had been abandoned and wasn’t discovered until the next morning. This was a traumatic event that was discussed at length after the crew left the scene. Captain Meisenbach recalls his feelings from that day, “The most overwhelming feeling I had was that something needed to be done to help the victim (family included) immediately.” Knowing that there are agencies that help victims wasn’t enough. He continued, “There are a lot of programs and agencies that provide services in an ‘official way’ but there was an immediate need that the bureaucracy was not meeting. We decided to bring the victim a huge basket of toys to somehow start the healing process for the family.” That was the birth of Create-A-Smile. More discussion followed about how to bridge the gap between donors and victims. The fire service is a natural bridge between the two because of the constant contact fire fighters have with people in the community. The scope has expanded to supporting other charities that work at creating smiles. Create-A-Smile is recognized county- wide as a leader in community support.

Today we are talking about my Momofuku Milk Bar obsession. Milk Bar is an incredible bakery in New York introduced to me last year by my oldest sis! Last week the best little surprise was delivered to me. Okay so it wasn't really a surprise because there were problems with shipping and my sister had to tell me, but a tin of Momofuku's Milk Bar blueberry and cream cookies arrived for me! my tin of blueberry and creams! I think I've mentioned a few times how much I love Milk Bar and their cookies. Anytime Claire comes home from New York she always comes bearing an assortment of Milk Bar cookies. Last time my parents went to NY they brought back the Milk Bar cookbook for me, and then last week Kathleen had cookies shipped to me for a little congrats present! Milk Bar is the genius idea stirred up by its founder Christina Tosi. She used to work at Momofuku (famous ramen noodle bar) as the pasty chef and would come up with the most unusual but delicious desserts. Her pastries soon become a highlight to the restaurant they decided to let her break off and start her own Momofuku bakery. Christina Tosi. The mastermind behind Milk Bar. A year ago when in New York, Claire and her boyfriend couldn't wait to take us Milk Bar. I fell in love. Milk Bar's menu consists of cereal milk ice cream, crack pie, birthday cake truffles, compost cookies and more. Once my parents got me the cookbook I finally took a shot at making my own confetti cookies and blueberry and cream cookies. Tasted pretty close to the real thing let me tell ya! Crack Pie. The name explains itself. This corn syrup, sugary pie is so good you get addicted to it like crack. The blueberry and cream cookies are without a doubt my favorite. The combination of flavors is amazing. The recipe isn't like a normal cookie recipe though. First you have to make the milk crumbs which makes up the "cream" part. The crumbs are made from milk powder and melted white chocolate. After 8 minutes of mixing the dough, in goes the dried blueberries. After an hour of the dough being in the fridge, huge ice cream scoop size amounts of dough go into the oven to bake. Blueberry and Cream cookie tin! All Milk Bar recipes are like this. Several ingredients and several steps go into recreating Tosi's masterpieces. They are so worth it though. Confetti cookies. They look like just regular funfetti cookies but I have actually made these and they are so much more! Anytime I hear someone is traveling to New York I recommend Milk Bar. If you plan to travel to NYC soon you have to make a stop. If you can't make it, you can order almost all their desserts from their website. After I instagrammed my cookies, one of my good friends told me she instantly got on the website and ordered two tins of cookies to be delivered! I will without a doubt have a Milk Bar cake as my wedding cake. My plan was to make the Milk bar birthday cake for my birthday, I didn't get around to it but Claire brought my birthday cake truffles home instead!
